30,000-square-foot Sloan Center will open on the River Campus in August, with full functionality by the end of the fall semester

30,000-square-foot Sloan Performing Arts Center is slated for a soft opening at the end of August, adding a much-anticipated new building to the University of Rochester’s River Campus just in time for the fall semester. The building will be fully functional by the end of the calendar year.

The Sloan Center is made possible thanks to the generosity of University Life Trustee Thomas Sloan ’65, ’67 (MS) and Linda Sloan ’67. Other lead supporters include Ed Smith ’72 and Andy Lopata Smith ’72; Brian F. 王子82, ’89S (MBA); Drew Mittelman ’68 and Maureen Adducci; Diane Waldgeir Perlberg ’77 and Mark C. Perlberg ’78; and Richard A. Leibner ’59 and Carole Cooper Leibner.

“This is the first building ever designed to serve the performing arts on the River Campus,格洛丽亚·卡尔弗说, dean of the School of Arts & 科学. “We’ve needed this additional space on campus for some time now, and because of the vision, 奉献, and leadership of the Sloans 和其他人, we can now offer a beautiful, 仔细设计, contemporary building that will nurture our students’ creative pursuits.”

Rochester students pursue degrees in theater, 跳舞, 和音乐. They participate in more than 40 performing arts-based clubs on the River Campus, 太, including 20 cocurricular 跳舞 groups. They engage in the International Theatre Program, 太, which typically offers four productions annually and two smaller works. The College also offers many 音乐al performances 和更多的 than 100 音乐 classes to undergraduates.

“Our students embrace theater, 跳舞, 和音乐, just as they do physics, 哲学, 和人类学, and so many other areas of study,卡尔弗补充道。. “That’s part of the magic here at Rochester—our students can pursue their academic and cocurricular passions and be part of an environment that supports exploration, 增长, 和想象力. The Sloan Center will be a great addition to campus—a center for joy, inspiration, and connection.”

汤姆·斯隆, a retired business executive and lifelong arts patron says, “Everything that will happen within these walls—on stage, 幕后故事, and in the hearts and minds of audience members—will be a catalyst for creativity, 社区, 和协作. We are excited that this new building will help enrich students’ lives and their overall experience on the River Campus.”

“剧院, 音乐, and 跳舞 provide distinct ways for people to come together—they offer inspiration, and they help us feel alive,琳达·斯隆补充道, who holds an MFA degree in drama and has dedicated much of her life to the arts. “This new building provides an additional space on campus where more of this can happen—we are honored to be a part of it.”

Located next to Todd Union and near Strong Auditorium, the three buildings will form a performing arts corridor on the River Campus. Each building is designed to support an array of creative activities, 包括类, 排练, set and costume production, 和表演.

Fall semester: Sloan Center activities

  • 八月底: Jay Yan, an international artist, will create a 60-foot-long mosaic that will span most of the Liebner Box Office and the Mittelman Family Café. Yan will spend a week onsite in August assembling thousands of reflective mirror discs to form an image of a dandelion—an iconic symbol of the University. This piece is dedicated to the late Alan Carmasin, 1967年, a longtime Alumni Relations staff member and an active University volunteer.
  • 9月21日: Institute for Performing Arts will host a Fringe Festival event in the Brian F. 王子心房. 叫做游说广告, this open mic-style event will feature 跳舞rs, 演员, 音乐家, 大满贯的诗人, 和其他人.
  • 11月6日和7日 Program of Dance and Movement will produce two student and faculty 跳舞 concerts called “Confluence” in the Ed and Andy Smith Theater.
  • December 2 – 11: Within the Ed and Andy Smith Theater, the International Theatre Program will present Stupid Fucking Bird by Aaron Posner, directed by Nigel Maister, the Russell and Ruth Peck Artistic Director.
